SHOCKING SOUTH JERSEY – A Book Talk and Signing presented by the Waterford Township Historical Society

October 28 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

In 2021, Danielle and a hometown friend became administrators of the Clementon Historical Commission’s social media presence. Combing newspapers.com for forgotten borough history to share with followers, she kept stumbling across eye-popping stories from well beyond Clementon – old headlines and coverage she saved to a laptop folder, and which now comprise Shocking South Jersey: Hoaxes, Hexes, a Harrowing Highway, and More.

Join Danielle as she talks about the book writing process and the three categories of shocking represented in her collection’s ten chapters. She’ll explain how the book’s Atco-based story and several other nearby tales first caught her eye and ultimately took form. The book talk will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.

AUTHOR BIO

Raised in Clementon, Danielle is continually drawn to regional, cultural, and untold history, with a particular interest in her home region. She holds a professional certificate in historic preservation and is pursuing a Masters of History from Rutgers University-Camden. Today, Danielle lives with her husband and rescue dog across the river from South Jersey in another storied south: South Philadelphia.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Move over, Jersey Devil. A new generation of thrilling – and true! – stories is here to raise South Jersey’s shock factor. Largely lost to time, these ten stunners include Atco’s dizzying love dreams, Camden’s mystical underground labyrinth, Glassboro’s UFO frenzy, and the origin of the “cursed” Deptford portion of Route 55. This gripping journey through the Garden State’s southernmost reaches also offers views of an escaped show lion, a fatal family love triangle, and the young woman who hoodwinked Camden newspapers before going on to threaten the free world as “Axis Sally.” Local author Danielle L. Burrows collected and researched these happenings and presents them here with detail and aplomb.
