The New Girl by Cassandra Calin

Let’s face it: being new in school is tough. Not to discredit the difficult experience of being the new kid, but for Lia, she was new to the school, language, and country. Coming from Romania to Montreal, Canada, where they primarily speak French, Lia starts out having a hard time connecting to others since she knows Romanian and English.

Lia goes to a special class for those who also emigrated to Canada. Lia doesn’t want anything to do with anyone and just wants to go back to Romania. She tries to befriend another student who is also Romanian, but he rejects her because all she talks about is Romania and he just wants to move forward in life.

With a mixture of English and limited French, she makes friends with a group of girls. She even joins a magazine club where she meets with a cute boy…. That’s where middle school drama ensues.

This is a graphic novel, and the artwork has a nice color selection, food scrumptiousness, parties shown via Polaroid photos, as well as intense emotions via facial expressions.
